Is civil service good for a lazy person? I want a peaceful, stress-free life with very less work. Is the IAS or IRS good for it?

When I was a young officer, I had a Commissioner who usually came to the office around 11:00 AM and left the office early.

Even when he was in the office, he would generally chat with junior officers rather than doing his office work, which he would finish within an hour or so.

He rose to the department's top post and became the Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).

When I was posted in Chennai, in the morning, we used to have an IAS officer of the 1992 batch.

He was not on good terms with the government then and was posted in a sidelined posting.

He told me he worked hardly half an hour every day. Hence, to pass his time in the office, he used to carry books and read them there.

A few years ago, there was an IG-rank IPS officer named D K Panda. He considered himself Lord Krishna's beloved and used to go to the office with all makeup. Even then, he survived in the government and got his promotions timely.



It is extremely difficult to get into civil services as the rejection rate of civil services is worse than 499/500.

However, once you get into civil services, your life is cool as you are assured of getting a time-bound promotion based on seniority, irrespective of your performance.

It does not mean that all civil services officers are lazy and there are many officers in the government who work more than 12 hours a day.

However, working hard is a matter of choice rather than a compulsion.

As a result, most civil servants work as little as they can, particularly if they are honest or sidelined, as they have nothing to gain by working hard or smart and nothing to lose if they are lazy and hardly work.

Recently, Mr Ashok Khemka, a senior IAS officer of the Haryana cadre, even wrote a letter to the CM where he said, 'My annual salary is Rs 40 lakh, work one hour a week. 


Can you imagine any other service that can offer such high salaries, perks, pension, facilities, and timely promotions with so little work?

There is no job better than civil services in India if you are a lazy and crazy person.
